#19 – After it Rains
The conspirators publish a muckraking exposé of Simon, and in his own newspaper no less! Scandal sells and they have laid out his indiscretions for all to see, using George and Geoff to help get it printed. The four women meet triumphantly as they bask in the glory of their take down of Simon. Surely things can only get better now?
During their celebrations Simon enters from the back of the stage, clapping slowly, with a grin on his face. ‘Bravo, nice try’ he says, ‘did you think it’d be that easy?’. He tells them that he has connections and he’s being moved to head up a newspaper in New York, The Broadway Bugle. He looks at Ella, turns and walks off stage casually, leaving the women standing open mouthed at the turn of events. It starts to rain. Cue music.
And there we have it, dear friends.
As with many things in life, even though you break away from the influence of something, it doesn’t mean it goes away forever. Here we have a very disappointed group of people who thought they’d taught Simon a lesson. However, often someone as evil as Simon is cunning enough to move on, free to continue controlling people elsewhere. That is life, where power and money often bring immunity that wouldn’t protect you or I. What the group have learned though is that rather, than getting even, breaking free of his influence and all the burdens and pain that Simon causes, brings a wonderful sense of hope and freedom. A reset. The bright clear smell after it rains.
Amelia knows she now has a friend in Charlotte. They’ve been through it together, but independently, and wasted countless years in the process, but no longer!
Charlotte has regained her daughter, her self-respect and her purpose in life. She gets to make up for lost time with a new set of friend, bur crucially, she’s not alone.
Ella has to find a new path. A life that doesn’t contain Simon. She knows it’s the right thing to do but her heart is with him…unfathomably. In discussions, we wondered whether Ella would end by following Simon to New York, but (for now) we’ve just left it relatively ambiguous.
Sophie got hit hard by the loss of her mum and the transformation of her sister to the shell she has become. But, she is now somewhere she never thought she’d be; empowered, hopeful and her life has purpose again. She can see a tomorrow, with love around her and for now that’s all she needs.
Good things happen to those who wait. Just not in the way they expected it to.
